Problem Statement

Development Blocker

  • Digital asset library was to undergo a migration to Adobe's Internal Digital Asset solution

  • Existing portal had complicated Search filter mechanism that could not be accommodated by Adobe's application in project constraints

  • Task was to scale existing solution to meet Digital asset library requirements and ease development

  • Application had a cart and checkout feature

  • Due to system constraints , I could enhance existing application features to a certain limit to meet requirements but not introduce new features

UX Preparation

Usability analysis on the existing application

  • I did not have much information other than some screenshots of the application hence i conducted a Heuristic evaluation on the existing application

  • Went page by page and listed done issues from a usability perspective

  • Before talking to client i wanted to be thorough in the issues to be solved

First client Connect

Search improvement and more

  • During the connect, client briefed that they wanted to use the opportunity to improve usability of entire application with search

  • Focus on making the workflow of the different personas better

  • I was also given a tour of the shop to understand why the process are followed & how much care has to be taken for the materials

Understanding personas

3 personas, 3 different tasks

I started with crafting basic personas & their task for the project. Summary of the personas are as follows

Fashion Designer

  • Looking up existing garments for inspiration to create new designs

  • Main group of users who are searching on the portal

  • Contribute to around 80% of user base
Spend 5-8 hours a week on the application

Event Manager

  • See collections or group of garments in the library

  • Interested in group of assets organised by type of fabric or year of manufacturing

  • Contribute to around 10% of user base
Spend 1-4 hours a week on the application

Digital Librarian

  • Manage day to day activities of the physical library

  • Approve and oversee the garments checkout flow

  • Add / remove assets to the library and updated metadata

  • Contribute to around 10% of user base
Spend 2-4 hours a day on the application

Usability tests

8 interviews and 1 FGD

  • Conducted 8 , 1 one 1 interviews with the 3 personas

  • Following were the main questions

    • Day to day use of the application

    • What the user expects from the application

    • Which features are used most

    • Top pain points

    • Requested features

    • Overall ease of use

  • The FGD was with a group of designers in their Paris team who browse through the application.

  • Their inputs were valuable to know the search interaction and expectations

Initial Concepts

Too Flashy and Heavy

  • I created a rapid prototype focussing on some improved features of search

  • It had lot of interaction and design elements

  • I was ask to tone down the aesthetics as it would move the user focus as well as it was going to take more development effort

The Redesign Portal

Main functions

  • Adobe's application had two main features, Asset search and profile.

  • For RL's Digital library , we added features like Collections, Cart & Checkout, Asset workflow and Lightbox (phase 2)

  • The design is flat with Dark blue and gold color palette

Multiple Homepages

  • We found it best that the three personas landed on their own personalised home pages

  • Search, Collections and Workflow were the 3 sections for landing pages. Lightbox(phase2), Cart and login made up a 6 link menu

  • These would be available for all users but the default landing page would change

Design Highlight #1

Search feature optimization

  • Search consisted of 100+ categories and 600 filter options

  • We introduced primary and secondary filter levels based on user input.

  • We introduced saved search, so that commonly applied & preferred filters were already appliedTApplied

Design Highlight #2

Filters

  • Introduced A-Z filter sorting within the categories

  • Also we introduced search within the filters for some categories

Design Highlight #3

Asset

  • Enhanced Asset Quick look to include improved zoom in features and previous/next navigation

  • Metadata could be seen better on web and mobile screens

These concepts were not used in the final outcome

Design Impact

Existing development blockers

  • Search and filters were designed as a enhancement on existing solution and were feasible to develop

  • Leaver-aged existing asset metadata solutions and eased development

  • Additional features were easy to fit in

Overall project improvements

Average time to task

- 50%

Based on follow up survey

  • Time on the portal was reduced significantly for the different personas

  • Multiple home pages created a positive outlook for the application to the users

  • Saved searches reduced menial tasks for the users

  • Learning curve for the portal was reduced significantly
